Camping in Ireland is an experience that everyone should try once, unfortunately, then you get hooked. We have gone camping for the last number of years but the last 2 have been spent in Curraghchase in Co Limerick. We went the first year as we had seen it on the Brennan brothers TV show and it just looked so natural and away from it all that we decided to take a chance and head up there. I fell in love immediately for all the reasons that the kids were a bit sceptical about, dodgy phone reception, 4G (Ha Ha), waterslide-arcade-gamesroom-movie channels(non existent). What is there though is plenty of nature and tranquility if that is what you like, with the odd plane flying overhead to Shannon

The woods that surround Curraghchase are full of little pathways, the one leading to Curragh House being the most popular. If the kids are looking for a playground you will find plenty to occupy them when you walk past the big old derelict house and down the sprawling lawn, more walkways , a playground fashioned mainly from felled logs, small lakes with ducks and swans all await any little adventurer.

This year they have added a fairy trail just alongside the campsite, and before you say anything- yes,grownups, it is short to you or I. Walk around it taking 6 year old steps and looking (in amazement) through 6 year old eyes then you can see why the smallies keep going around the path to see if they missed anything the 5th time around.

As far as amenities go, everything is available. Laundry Room (may have to wait)-free, hot showers- free, basic kitchen (remember you are camping) are all available on site. If self sufficiency isn't really your thing then there is a lovely little cafe here with tea,coffee,soup,sandwiches and cakes available onsite also.

If you're looking for things to do close by, here are a few suggestions or if you want to travel a bit further a spin northwards up the coast is definitely worth the time, the views are almost as nice as West Cork. 

Curraghchase is pretty close to wild camping but with everything you need, if you need it, close by. When asked after the first visit where did they want to go the following year, the sceptical 6 to 15 year old children with very little phone reception all chose Curraghchase.

The previous two years were blessed with fine weather but luck didn't hold out for the 2017 event. Despite this plan b was always in place and the event was moved to St Brendan's school where a mixture of bunting, plants, flowers, toys and a multitude of other odds and ends were put to artistic use to decorate the hall. 

Street Feast is all about bringing community together in a shared event, sometimes even taking people out of their comfort zone, where they mix with different people than maybe their usual circle of friends. This is the part that I like best, for quiet a while that day I had a wonderful discussion with an American lady who happened on the event by accident and as it turned out was here as part of a delegation to donate money to a suicide prevention group in West Cork. I also had an interesting chat with another gentleman who appeared to be making the most of the occasion as he flitted and bounced from table to table talking to all and sundry. That is what I find so lovely about this event, the diversity of the people who turn up.

Then we have the food, what a spread. Each year it just gets better, the variety of food that is brought to the table is just spectacular, and the amount of work that some people put into what they bring is commendable. That though is not the point of it all, it's getting involved in your community that is the important part. So whether it's a few ham sandwiches knocked together in the morning or an elaborately decorated dish, all are welcome to partake in the feast.

As with any event like this there are the people who pull it altogether, I won't go naming them as they are all shy quiet types who prefer to stay away from the limelight, what I will say though is thanks to you all for bringing this wonderful event to Bantry.

The Maritime, The Snug, The Bantry Inn and The Brick Oven all qualified from the initial heats with The Brick Oven declared the winner in the end. Have to say I agree with the decision, the swordfish with a zingy summery sauce was stunning. Having said that I would'nt turn down any of the rest of the competitors offering to cook on a Summers day if they felt that way inclined because all the food was delicious and definitely a change from the regular bbq menu. Well done to all !!! With winds reaching just short of hurricane speeds it was one of the worst storms to reach Ireland in living memory. Bantry Bay was destination of choice for several trawlers as they sought refuge from the wild seas. These photos were taken in and around Bantry pier so what it must have been like out on the high seas couldn't have been anything but terrifying. Here's hoping that that was the last of the big ones. ]]> (Momentsintime Photography) Bantry photography scenery sea waves west cork https://www.momentsintime.ie/blog/2014/2/well-that-was-rough Thu, 13 Feb 2014 16:02:00 GMT Mind yourselves. https://www.momentsintime.ie/blog/2014/2/mind-yourselves Kilocrohane Cove.Kilocrohane Cove.      First off, my thoughts are with the families and friends of the two men who are currently missing on the Sheep's Head peninsula  at the moment.

     Having spent a good part of yesterday morning out around that area and witnessing the beauty and wildness of that part of West Cork it is easy to forget how unforgiving nature, no matter how beautiful, can be. Less than 20 yards from where this photograph was taken there is a plaque fixed to a rock where author JG Farrell was swept away by a wave during a storm 35 years ago. While I was there for only a short while yesterday morning, conditions changed from nice to nasty in only a matter of a couple of minutes with a fierce hail shower coming out of nowhere without warning.

     It has all been said a thousand times before, but saying it again will do no harm. When visiting places of natural beauty especially where the sea meets the mountains, as the Scouts say "Be prepared". Situations can change almost instantaneously for several reasons. Even during the summer months vigilance is required, the author mentioned above was swept away in the month of August. Dressing appropriately and having the right gear will go along way to protecting you from the elements, we all know how changeable they can be in these parts.

     I would add one thing to the scouts motto though, picked up from having been in a few hairy situations while trying to get that better view for a photograph,and  that is "Be Careful". That photograph might look lovely on your wall when printed and framed but would it be worth it if things went the other way and your foot slipped on the rock, or the cloud cover didn't lift and you decided to try and make your way down anyway.

     Don't get me wrong, when i was young we were given out to for being foolish enough to fall out of the tree, not for climbing it in the first place. I will still try and get closer to the edge or just that little bit higher but only while keeping in mind that I have a wife and four kids who would be pretty annoyed with me if I did anything stupid.

     So for all you ramblers, hikers,climbers, nature lovers & photographers out there, please say a quiet prayer for the return of the two men, enjoy nature but MIND YOURSELVES.
